Registration requirements

To be eligible for ARHA registration, horses must:
 

  • be registered with one of the following associations: AQHA, APHA, ApHC, PHBA and IBHA

  • have at least one roan parent

  • be any base color approved by the primary breed association

  • have roan hairs throughout 80% of body

  • mature to 14 hands or taller

  • be of traditional stock horse body type


Standard Registration:

  • ARHA registration approval is based on review of application and color photos as explained on the registration application. 

  • Color classifications will be determined by ARHA and body colors will be accepted or rejected per color qualification standards determined by the ARHA Registration Committee. Learn more about roan colors here.

  • If you have a questionable horse, ARHA can dispatch an inspector to personally inspect your horse for eligibility.  An inspection fee will apply.

  • To apply for registration, remit ARHA registration application, 4 full color body photos (no saddle), a copy of breed registration papers and appropriate fees.


​IMPORTANT: If eligibility is questionable, a UC Davis DNA Roan Gene Test will be required.

The American Roan Horse Association is a secondary registry for all roan colored stock-type horses of AQHA, APHA, ApHC, PHBA and IBHA bloodlines.
