Lisa Wilkes and VS Code Me Lucky
1) When and where did you first see your roan, how did you end up with him as yours, and how long have you owned your roan?
I raised my roan mare VS Code Me Lucky barn name Marla. She is 5 years old.
My husband, Mike Wilkes, has been involved in raising horses for years. He and his parents raised racing quarter horses. After Mike & I got married in 2007 we decided we wanted to raise what our true passion is, the Western Pleasure horse. So we started revamping our broodmares by adding Western Pleasure breed mares. One of those mares was a mare named Bettin With My Heart who is a daughter of Jacks Are Lucky Too out of a daughter of Barpasser. When we bought her we felt she would be a good broodmares for us and she has! Her first foal was my mare Marla. We have been a fan of VS Code Red since we watched him show at the Richert as a 2 yr old and Of course we loved his dam Vital Signs Are Good. So when it came time to bred our mare “Betty” we knew exactly what stud we wanted to bred to, VS Code Red. We felt the two would compliment each other. Mike puts a lot of thought into what stud to cross on what mare. He never breeds to a stallion just because he likes the stallion. He studies the movement & confirmation of both horses before making a decision on breeding.
So long story short when it came time for Betty to have her first foal 2013 I was so excited and of course worried, so many things can go wrong with foaling out. I watched her day and night she never gave me the normal foaling signs so I thought will she is going to carry this foal over her due date. I had to be gone one night and I felt Betty would be fine. Shes not going to have this foal she doesn’t even have a bag much less dripping milk. Well I was wrong!! I almost had. Heart attack when I went to her stall the next morning and there stood a beautiful red roan filly!! I couldn’t believe it and of course Betty looked at me like look what I have and I did it all by myself ! I was like Betty you needed me to be here with you don’t you know somethings could have went wrong! Needless to say I was in love!
2) Where, what level, and in what classes do you show your roan?
I show in the Amateur Western Pleasure level 3 at all the major shows.
3) What is your favorite thing to do with your roan horse?
I absolutely love riding Marla whether it’s practice or showing. She is a special horse. She always tries to please me and my trainer. After riding she loves her treats!
4) What is your favorite memory with your roan horse?
My favorite memory with Marla is my first time ever showing at the Congress in 2016. Marla was a 3 year old. I was such a novice rider and so nervous !! But Marla as a 3 year old packed me around that show arena like she had done all year and we won the Novice Amateur Western Pleasure!!
5) What are your thoughts about the American Roan Horse Association?
I think the roan horse association is a great. It gives the roan horse an opportunity to be recognized for their beautiful color. I love how the association gives the end of year high point award and the fast Fifty Plus Program. Also, the high point roan horse at shows is a nice incentive.
