Ali & Kyle Hubbell | Kanter Kulture podcast

1. Tell us about yourself

“My name is Ali Hubbell. I am from Hamburg, Pennsylvania. I am married to Kyle Hubbell and we have a 6 year old daughter named, Della. I currently work for myself; Ali Hubbell Photography (I specialize in Equine Portrait Photography) and I recently started a media company and podcast called, Kanter Kulture. Previously, I worked in healthcare business development/marketing/sales for 13 years. I have a Bachelors from Shippensburg University and I am currently working on my Masters in Marketing.”

2. How did you become involved in horses?

“I didn’t grow up with horses in my life. But, my mom was always around horses when she was growing up. When I was about 12, I told my mom, “anyone can ride horses, its easy!” So, she took me for lessons to “see how easy” it really was…to her disbelief, I took to it very quickly and have been hooked ever since.”

3. Tell us about your horse

“My current show horse is VS Fully Revived, aka Zeus. He is by VS Flatline and out of a Good Version mare. We show in the Amateur All Around events (horsemanship, showmanship, equitation and western riding are our best events). I remember watching Kelley Christy show him in Tampa during one of the winter circuits and thinking, “WOW! A ROAN Hunter Under Saddle horse!?!” She had won the Select HUS circuit there and I fell in love with him. I was not looking for a horse at the time, but I remember that he really stood out to me. A few months later, my show horse had to be euthanized.  I was heartbroken… I didn’t even know if I wanted to show again for a while. I took a break and leased a horse for the summer. At the end of the summer, Val Kearns posted Zeus for sale! I did not even know she had him. I immediately reached out and said I’d buy him without trying him..LOL. My husband told me absolutely not and I had to go at least ride him. I knew I’d love him and I didn’t even think I needed to throw a leg over him. But, I flew out and it was love at first sight.  We didn’t click as quickly as I had thought we would. A lot of it was because he is the bounciest animal I have ever been on! It took us a while to “vibe” but now we’ve got each other figured out.”

4. What has been your biggest achievement showing your horse?

“I would say being a finalist in the L3 Amateur Showmanship and L3 Amateur Equitation at this years AQHA World Show. Keeping him home and doing the work on my own is not easy at times. The reward of standing in that arena and getting our names called was the most incredible feeling.  Zeus and I have such a bond when it comes to the pattern classes. At the Congress and the World show this year, as we walked to the first cone, I’d tell him, “I’ll do my best and you do your best. That’s all we need to do.” I swear he understood. He’s really fun for me to show! He lets me push him and ask him to do things I’ve never been able to do with another horse.”

5. What is a show day ritual that helps ensure a successful day?

“Old school rap music and Pumpkin Treats for Zeus”

6. Tell us about your podcast.  What made you decide to create a podcast?

“Kanter Kulture was started based on the idea of horses are FUN. So often, we get so caught up in the “who’s doing what, who’s wearing what, who bought what horse,” etc and we forget why we got into this sport- for the horses! I remember being a pre-teen and teenager, going to the barn and just being able to talk and talk about horses for hours. It was therapeutic! In fact, it still is! I love the conversations that are had in the “aisleway”. So many impactful moments and memories have been made and have yet to happen. I wanted to create a space where we laugh at the REAL moments and take a minute to indulge in a smile, or hopefully a belly laugh, when it comes to the enjoyment our horses bring us. I can be having a horrible day; I walk into the barn and I’m immediately starting to feel better. I know so many of us feel the same way. I am hopeful this podcast can continue to be an unconventional yet somewhat educational and fun listening experience for all equine enthusiasts. “

7. What is your goal of the podcast?

“I want people to laugh and not take the “horse show” world quite so seriously. It needs to be fun! About a year ago, I went through a breakup with my trainer and friend of over 13 years. I was absolutely devastated. I definitely contemplated giving this all up (horses/showing). But, after getting through a few more of the grieving stages, I knew horses would always be in my life. And really, I do this because I love horses.  I found my happiness in horses and I truly hope that others can do the same through my podcast.”

8. What are future topics you are hoping to discuss?

“I want to talk to more judges and coaches. I think all their different personalities and perspectives are so cool. I want to talk to people that have been friends/competitors and how they maintain a friendship through being in a competitive sport. Of course, some more fun topics: I would LOVE to have a rodeo announcer commentate on a showmanship/horsemanship/pleasure class. Dating in the horse world. I have a “TrotLine” where people can call in and we can discuss anything they want. I’d also love to have a vet on!”

9. What has been the biggest challenge to overcome with hosting a podcast?

“I would say the biggest challenge is viewership. I’m new! I know my photography business took a while to build so I am being patient. I hope the more engaging topics that I can provide, the more people will be interested to hear what’s next!”

10. What is the best way to reach you?

“I can be found anywhere LOL.”
